What makes up performance?

Performance comprises both results (what we want our people to do) and behaviours (the way we want them to do it). You may need to agree both to get the outcomes required.

Results will consist of metrics such as:

  • Achievement of a revenue target.
  • Delivery of an objective within a defined timeframe.
  • Meeting deadlines.

Behaviours include:

  • Absenteeism.
  • Ownership of issues.
  • Demonstration of company values.
  • Accuracy.
  • Articulation.
  • Adherence to processes.

You need to know how your coachee is currently performing so monitor progress regularly, look for evidence such as the metrics above to form a perspective of their strengths, development needs and consistency. Look for patterns of behaviour over time.
